02:53 – Ruth chapter 2 is building up to the climax of this love story
At this point, Ruth and Naomi are in Bethlehem. As Naomi’s caretaker, Ruth decides to work to provide for herself and Naomi. Naomi gives her the okay, and Ruth goes out to glean.
The Law of Gleaning allows the collection of unharvested crops for distribution to needy populations. It is God’s way of providing for the poor – the widows, the foreigners, and the destitute. They had to work for it. It wasn’t free.
Leviticus 19:9-10
Leviticus 23:22
Deuteronomy 24:19-22
04:26 – Ruth goes to glean in Boaz’s field, which was not intentional. She doesn’t even know it’s his field until she steps onto it.
Boaz then enters the scene and greets his harvesters who greet him in return. He asks about Ruth and who she is.
We see an unnamed harvester basically do the intro. It’s reasonable to believe that Holy Spirit is showing up here as this unnamed servant.
In John 16:13, Jesus says, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
05:26 – Ruth found favor in Boaz
She was to glean on his field, permanently
She was free to immediately follow the servant girls where the pickings would be most numerous (which is NOT common)
His intervention and provision are on his behalf, taking care of her
The favor is what we call GRACE. It was unmerited favor that she received from Boaz – the kinsman redeemer. It is a gift.
In Hebrew, the kinsman redeemer is the goel.
Boaz invites her to dine with him, and he personally serves Ruth
Boaz then instructs his harvesters to let her glean directly behind them and to pull out handfuls of stalks, which she would obviously be able to pick up the extras of.
Ruth went back to glean and ended up with an ephah of barley, equivalent to 9 gallons or 30 lbs, enough for five days worth of food for Naomi and Ruth.
Boaz sees her being taken care of, just as Jesus sees us being taken care of eternally.
JESUS is OUR goel. He provided above and beyond what we deserved, and by His Grace, we received the gift of faith.
07:54 – Naomi recognized Boaz as a kinsman redeemer and started to see the light
Even in the most unlikely situations, we see the hand of the Lord.
09:23 – An invitation to look at your life and identify when the Lord came through unexpectedly to provide for your needs
