“I don’t have time to be in the Word of God. I wish I could get deeper in my walk with the Lord but I don’t have time.”
“I wish I had more time. I can’t finish everything and my to-do list is never-ending. I’m all stressed out! I’m not where I should be!”
“I want to get more done. How do I say no to this? I’m scared of what people are going to think.”
Sis, have you ever found yourself saying or asking one of those things? If you have, you have probably been overcommitting!
Today, I am asking you two questions to help you say goodbye to overcommitting. It’s time for the craziness to stop. It’s time to say goodbye to anxiety and being overwhelmed by your schedule.

04:06 – What does overcommitting reveal about the condition of your heart?
Francis Schaeffer in his book, The Lord’s Work in the Lord’s Way and No Little People (Crossway Short Classics), said that a lot of us tend to do the Lord’s work in our strength.
We try to do things in the way that we know how, with the tools that we think are best, instead of waiting on the Lord to give us the next step; instead of being led by the Spirit and doing things in God’s timing and methods.
06:12 – The truth is apart from Christ, we can’t do a lot of things
When you committed to following Christ, you essentially said, “I can’t do this alone. I need you. Holy Spirit, please, live in me. Lead me. Give me what I need when I need it.”
07:40 – A moment of prayer
09:52 – How do we avoid the madness and stop overcommitting
We need to stop being in a rush to give other people an answer.
11:07 – What happens when you don’t want to jump on something that looks like it’s the right thing
Sometimes we want to jump on the thing that looks like the right thing to do. But sometimes, even if it doesn’t make sense, God has something else for us. We just have to be willing to wait.
I want you to wait before you start committing to stuff before you give someone the obvious. Yes, we seek the Lord.
I highly encourage you to consider fasting as a regular practice. To fast is a spiritual discipline. I highly recommend seeking the Lord about what you are going to lay down and fast – if it’s a meal, entertainment, style, or whatever. Seek Him with all of you and suffer a little bit so that you can humble yourself.
3 Tips To Stop Overcommitting in 2023
15:03 – Tip #1: Don’t just say yes or no. Wait!
Wait before you make a decision. Seek the Lord and wait for Him to give you a clear yes before you commit, even if it appears the situation is a clear yes.
15:12 – Tip #2: Pray, worship, and seek wise counsel
If you aren’t already, get into a solid local church where you have community and wise biblical counsel.
17:52 – Tip #3: Take a step back and look at the bigger picture
Take a step back and assess where the Lord has you, what He is leading you to focus on and prioritize in THIS season; and whether or not that commitment aligns with prioritizing what the Lord’s ministry or mission field the Lord has you serving in.
Sometimes the Lord leads us to do things that don’t make sense.
Things don’t have to make sense. The point is that you trust God. If you trust Him to take care of you; to provide for you; to be your source of strength, joy, and hope; and to give you what you need when you need it, then even if it doesn’t make sense, you can trust that you’re going to be fine.
