What the Word says:
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:12
-
This is the first relational commandment that speaks to horizontal relationships.
-
Honor = Hebrew word “kāḇaḏ” which means heavy, to honor or glorify
Biblical Instructions on How to Honor Your Parents:
05.21 – #1: SHOW RESPECT
Proverbs 23:22 “Listen to your father who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.”
-
Like the Bereans in Acts 17, test what is said against scripture daily. “Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” Acts 17:11
-
The word despise = hold in contempt, disrespect, hold as insignificant
08.57 – #2: FORGIVE
Matthew 18:21-22 “Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.”
10.39 – #3: OBEY
Ephesians 6:1-4 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
13.00 – #4: EXTEND GRACE
Ephesians 4:29 “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
13.52 – instead of condemning and hating your parents, love, forgive, respect, and honor them because you are commanded to.
